Why are there different totals? These figures come from the British inquiry of 1912. The US Senate inquiry counted slightly differently: 2,223 aboard and 706 saved. Historians still revise the numbers as new records are found, which is why most books say “about 2,224 aboard and about 1,500 died”.

Your turnGraph it, then explain it
1. Draw a bar graph of the % saved for each group in Table 1. Label both axes and give your graph a title.
- Which group had the best chance of survival? Which had the worst?
- A third class child had a lower chance of surviving than a first class man or a first class woman. Use Table 2 to check this. Is it true?
- The rule on the night was “women and children first”. Do the figures show that the rule was followed equally in every class? Give evidence.
- Suggest two reasons why third class passengers were less likely to survive.
